All You Need to Know

Level Descriptions:

*Please register each individual dancer in their correct level per each category.  

 (Example: Suzie may have 2 years of competitive jazz experience (flare level) but this is her first year competing in tap (Spark level). This rule helps with overall fairness of an individual/group levels per category.

SPARK – (Level 1) These dancers should have 0-2 competitive years’ experience, per specific category, and focus on basic dance techniques, terminology, tap sounds, strength, flexibility, teamwork and performance.

FLARE – (Level 2) These dancers should have minimum of 2 years competing, per specific category, and are showing growth in all their “Spark” techniques. In addition, incorporating formations, connecting to their techniques, bodies, teammates.

BLAZE – (Level 3) – These dancers should have a minimum of 4 years competing, per specific category. Clear indication that they continue to build strength and control in their “Spark – Flare” levels as well as trust, and support within their teammates. Formation changes, lifts, partnering and transitions should be smooth. These dancers should also have great stage presentation, crisp tap sounds and clear understanding of a storyline and choreography.

FLAME – (Level 4) – These experienced dancers should have a minimum of 6 years competing, per specific category, Show significant growth and strength in all of their “Spark-Blaze” levels. In addition, we should see their comfort to perform, entertain and move an audience. These dancers may show they have great technique and are prepared with confidence to continue their education in the dance industry.

*Dance ROUTINES that show more clean/advanced techniques than the level they are registered in, at any level, will be honored and “FIRED-UP” to the next level.

*Multiple duets require different dancers.  *Multiple trios are allowed to have 2 of the same dancers in any other trio.

The age category for all routines is determined by using the average age of the performers as of February 1st, beginning of competitive season. This includes all groups, duo/trios, and solos. Performers maintain their regional age category at Nationals. Dancers must compete in one of our regional events and a routine must qualify for nationals.                               There are no “understudies or a stand in” dancers for a routine unless due to injury, and that new dancer must have participated in one of our regional events. 

Dance INSTRUCTORS/CHOREOGRAHERS are not permitted to dance with their students under any circumstances or that routine will be automatically disqualified.

TAP * JAZZ * BALLET * LYRICAL * CONTEMPORARY/MODERN * HIP-HOP * MUSICAL THEATER * ACRO * OPEN HIGH SCHOOL DANCE TEAM * COLLEGE DANCE TEAM

  • Tap: Tap shoes required! demonstrates clean tap technique and clear sounds. No tap sounds are permitted in the music.
  • Jazz: Choreography focusing on various jazz techniques, control and performance
  • Ballet: Classical ballet technique & movement. Pointe shoes are permitted in this category.
  • Lyrical: Emotional expression and choreography of the lyrics to the music with elements of ballet and jazz techniques with fluidity, balance, and control. 
  • Contemporary/Modern: Contemporary and/or Modern techniques with connection to the floor and stage and emotional connection with the audience. Displays good flexibility & strength.
  • Hip Hop: Choreography displaying street and/or jazz funk techniques.
  • Musical Theater: Theatrical choreography and uses music from Broadway or a Cinematic Musical.
  • Acro: 50% or more of the routine should be acrobatic skills in addition to dance choreography.
  • Open: Any combination of dance styles or a routine that does not fall under any other category recognized or represented.
  • Student Choreography: Routine choreographed primarily buy student(s) with minimal instructors’ assistance.   
  • HS/College Dance Teams: High energy choreography typically in Jazz, Jazz Funk and/or Hip-Hop. With multiple formation changes. May display kicklines, poms and pyramids.    

*MAXIMUM OF 3 ACRO / TUMBLE PASSES PERMITTED IN A DANCE ROUTINES.

Routines must compete in their scheduled time/session in order to qualify or overall or additional awards. Any routine that requests to move to a different session will receive an adjudication award only! No Exceptions.                         Solos can only place in their highest score routine

FLAME OF EXCELLENCE: Director/Studio Award: Studio that displays kindness, school spirit, and all-around professionalism.

WYLDFYRE TORCH – Awarded to the most well-rounded studio, despite level. This studio trains and competes in multiple genera’s educating and preparing their dancers for a bright future, for professional opportunities in the dance industry.
